What you need to know

Banks want to know you can repay, which is why salary slips or ITRs are the usual requirement. Without a job you still have three solid routes: a card secured by a fixed deposit (no income proof needed), an add-on card on a family member’s account, or an unsecured card based on other documented income such as rent, pension, business income or investment income shown in your ITR.

  • An FD-backed card is the only route that builds a credit history in your own name without any income proof.
  • Add-on cards are the primary cardholder’s liability and appear on their credit report.
  • Existing customers with large balances or investments sometimes receive pre-approved offers in the bank’s app — check there before applying elsewhere.

Your options

FD-backed card

Deposit ₹10,000–₹50,000 depending on the bank (Kotak ₹10,000, IDFC FIRST ₹20,000, SBI ₹25,000, ICICI ₹50,000). Limit 75%–90% of the FD. No income proof.

Add-on card

Your spouse or parent requests it on their card. Separate card and optional sub-limit; bills go to the primary holder.

Other income

Rent, pension, interest, dividends or freelance income shown in your ITR can support an application for a regular card.

Relationship offers

A long relationship with a bank, with good balances, can bring pre-approved card offers without fresh income proof.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a credit card without income proof?

Yes, a card against a fixed deposit usually needs only KYC documents and the FD. Unsecured cards almost always need proof of income.

Can a housewife get a credit card?

Yes — as an add-on on the spouse’s card, or in her own name against an FD. A card in her own name builds her own credit history.

Can I get a credit card on the basis of my savings balance?

A large savings or FD relationship can bring a pre-approved offer, but a plain savings balance is not usually accepted as income proof. An FD-backed card is the direct route.

Will my limit be low on a secured card?

It depends on the FD. A ₹1 lakh FD at 80% gives an ₹80,000 limit. You can raise it by increasing the FD.
