Know about today’s gold price in India
India is one of the world’s two largest consumers of gold, accounting for roughly a quarter of global jewellery and investment demand. Almost all of it is imported, so the domestic rate tracks the international price in US dollars, converted at the rupee exchange rate, plus import duty and GST. Gold is bought for weddings and festivals, as a store of value and, increasingly, through paper and digital forms such as ETFs and gold funds.
LBMA/COMEX price in USD per troy ounce (31.1035 g).
A weaker rupee raises the landed cost of gold.
6% import duty and 3% GST are built into retail prices.
Factors that affect the gold rate
| Factor | How it moves gold prices |
|---|---|
| International gold price | Indian prices follow global spot and futures prices. |
| USD/INR exchange rate | Rupee depreciation raises Indian gold prices even if global prices are flat. |
| Interest rates & inflation | Falling real interest rates and high inflation usually support gold. |
| Central-bank buying | Reserve diversification by central banks (including RBI) adds demand. |
| Geopolitical risk | Wars and crises increase safe-haven demand. |
| Import duty & GST | Duty changes move domestic prices instantly (cut to 6% in July 2024). |
| Seasonal demand | Weddings, Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali raise local premiums. |
