BIS Hallmark & HUID — How to Verify Gold
Mandatory hallmarking, the 6-digit HUID and how to verify jewellery on the BIS CARE app.

Hallmarking certifies the purity of gold jewellery and artefacts. BIS hallmarking became mandatory in phases from 23 June 2021, and since 1 April 2023 every hallmarked item must carry a unique 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification). You can verify any HUID free of cost on the BIS CARE app.

Frequently asked questions
Is old jewellery without HUID still valid?
Consumers can keep and sell it; jewellers must hallmark it before resale. You can get old jewellery hallmarked through a jeweller.
What is the hallmarking charge?
A nominal per-article fee (≈ ₹45 + GST) collected by the jeweller.
Can I get a refund for impure hallmarked jewellery?
Yes — BIS rules provide compensation of twice the shortfall value plus testing charges.
