No-cost EMI and card EMIs — what they really cost
- Card EMI converts a purchase into instalments at an interest rate set by the issuer, plus a one-time processing fee and 18% GST on both interest and fee.
- “No-cost EMI” means the merchant gives an upfront discount equal to the interest. You still see interest on your statement and pay GST on it, and you usually lose the cashback on that purchase.
- Most cashback cards exclude EMI transactions from rewards (Amazon Pay ICICI, Cashback SBI, Axis ACE all list EMI as excluded).
- The whole purchase amount blocks your credit limit on day one and is released only as EMIs are paid.
- Pre-closing a card EMI usually attracts a foreclosure charge — read the offer before converting.

Frequently asked questions
Which credit card is best for online shopping?
Pick by platform: Amazon Pay ICICI for Amazon (free, 5% for Prime), Flipkart Axis for Flipkart and Myntra, Tata Neu Infinity for Tata brands. For spread-out online spending, Cashback SBI Card (5% on online spends, capped at ₹2,000 per cycle).
Are rewards given on EMI purchases?
Usually not. Most shopping and cashback cards exclude EMI transactions. If you plan to convert a large purchase to EMI, a platform discount may be worth more than the card reward you lose.
Is no-cost EMI really free?
The interest is offset by a discount, but you pay 18% GST on the interest component and often a processing fee, so it is close to free, not free. You also lose any cashback on that purchase.
Why did I get less cashback than expected?
Common reasons: the monthly or quarterly cap was hit, the merchant is coded outside the bonus category, the transaction was an excluded type (wallet load, gift card, EMI), or part of the order was refunded.
Card features, fees and reward rates are compiled from issuers’ published terms and reputable card-review sites (source and date on each card page). Issuers change benefits often — confirm the latest MITC before applying.
