Credit score & utilisation

  • Utilisation: TransUnion CIBIL describes spending around 30% of available limit as healthy; higher utilisation may lower score.
  • CIBIL: higher utilisation suggests over-extension; each credit application enquiry may have a marginal impact and many applications in a short period may hurt the score; checking your own score has no impact.
  • Bureau update frequency: RBI circular of 8 Aug 2024 requires credit institutions to report credit information to CICs fortnightly (or shorter), effective 1 Jan 2025, submitted within 7 calendar days of the fortnight.
  • Free Full Credit Report including credit score, once per calendar year from each CIC (RBI, 1 Sep 2016; effective 1 Jan 2017).
  • Card issuers cannot report a new card to CICs before activation; must intimate cardholder before reporting default; update within 30 days of settlement.
  • From 1 Apr 2027 (Amendment Directions 2026): card accounts reported ’past due’ only when overdue more than 3 days.

How to improve your approval chances

  • Apply for a card that matches your income — premium cards have much higher thresholds.
  • Check your credit report for errors and fix them first (free once a year from each bureau).
  • Avoid several applications in a short period; each creates a hard enquiry.
  • Pre-approved offers from your own bank usually need less paperwork.
  • New to credit? Start with an FD-backed card and graduate after 6–12 months of on-time payments.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for a Federal Bank credit card?

Age: 18+ secured / 21+ unsecured (Celesta page: 18-70).

What credit score do I need?

A CIBIL score of 750 or more gives the best approval odds; below 700, consider a secured (FD-backed) card first.

Can I get a card without income proof?

Yes — a card against a fixed deposit usually needs no income proof and helps build a credit history.

How do I check my application status?

Track on Federal Bank credit card portal/app with application reference number, DOB and mobile; or call 1800 420 1199
